Helston RFC came up short in their away fixture against Newquay Hornets on Saturday, losing 27-21 in a closely contested Counties 2 Cornwall clash.
Conditions were unusually favourable for October in Newquay, with bright sunshine and barely a breeze providing the perfect stage for a fast, open game of rugby.
Helston made the most of those conditions with some well-worked attacking play. Tries came from Ben Rosevear, Harry Walsh-Newton (sponsored by Pip Kevern Plumbing) and Heydon Dark (sponsored by RW Hodge), with Rosevear adding three assured conversions to keep the visitors within touching distance throughout.
Newquay, however, proved clinical when it mattered most, taking full advantage of penalty opportunities to edge ahead on the scoreboard. A late push from Helston almost turned the tide, but the Hornets held firm to secure the win.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for Helston to take into next weekend. The squad will look to regroup and rediscover their strong form from last season as they prepare for a big double-header at Clodgey Lane on Saturday, hosting both Bude 1XV and 2XV.
