Helston RFC IIs began their league campaign in emphatic style, running in eight tries to secure a dominant 52-14 victory over Veor RFC at Illogan Park.

Despite challenging windy conditions, Helston's second string demonstrated the impressive depth within the club's ranks, fielding a well-balanced squad that blended experienced campaigners with promising emerging talent.

The men in blue set their intentions early, crossing the whitewash four times in the opening period. Nathan Holliday, Jack Sherrat, Jordi Willey, and captain Stewart Ferguson all found their way over the line, with Tom Townsend's reliable boot adding the extras on each occasion to establish a commanding 0-28 half-time lead.

Veor showed their fighting spirit after the break, responding with two converted tries of their own to narrow the deficit. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished as Helston maintained their clinical edge.

Matty Nichol, Chris Olliffe, Idris Logan, and Tom Townsend himself added four more tries to the tally, with Townsend converting two of his own scores.

Several players caught the eye with standout performances. Captain Stewart Ferguson led by example with some thunderous defensive hits, while Matty Nichol showcased his quality with an impressive all-round display.

In the pack, Jake Bowers (sponsored by Specsavers Helston) earned the Forward of the Match award for his tireless work throughout the 80 minutes. Behind the scrum, Jordi Willey's (sponsored by Haulfryn Group Praa Sands Holiday Park) dynamic performance earned him the Back of the Match accolade.

Meanwhile, Helston's first XV were awarded a walkover victory at Clodgey Lane after Bodmin were unable to field a team.

This impressive debut performance by the seconds has certainly given selectors food for thought ahead of next Saturday's fixture, when Helston's first XV face Perranporth. With players now putting their hands up for selection, competition for places in the starting XV promises to be fierce.

The strong start to the season bodes well for what promises to be an exciting campaign for Helston RFC across all levels of the club.
