After suffering a disappointing defeat to Perranporth in league action the previous weekend, Helston RFC were determined to bounce back and demonstrate their credentials as genuine contenders in the Counties 2 Championship Community Cup.
The home side faced local rivals Falmouth RFC in what promised to be a fiercely contested derby match. Helston made the perfect start, with Harry Walsh-Newton crossing the try line almost immediately after kick-off. Ben Rosevear added the conversion to give the hosts an early 7-0 advantage.
However, the momentum shifted when Lewis Eustice received a yellow card, leaving Helston temporarily down to 14 men. Falmouth capitalised on their numerical advantage, scoring a try and adding a penalty to edge ahead 7-8. The home side responded with characteristic determination, as captain Jack Jenkin powered over for his first try of the match, ensuring Helston took a 14-8 lead into the interval.
Whatever was said in the Helston huddle at half-time had the desired effect. The men in blue emerged for the second period with renewed vigour, displaying the potent combination of attacking flair and defensive solidity that served them so well during last season's successful campaign.
The second half belonged entirely to Helston. Their defence proved impenetrable, keeping Falmouth scoreless for the entire 40 minutes, while their attack clicked into gear with devastating effect. Captain Jenkin completed a memorable hat-trick, while Walsh-Newton added his second try of the afternoon. Jordi Willey also got his name on the scoresheet as Helston ran riot.
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 40-8 victory for the home side – a result that not only restored confidence after the previous week's setback but also sent a clear message to their cup competition rivals. Not only did he lead from the front and score a hat trick but Jack Jenkin (sponsored by MSB Group) secured himself a deserved Man of the Match - chosen by match day sponsors Warwick Plumbing and Heating.
This dominant performance will give Helston tremendous momentum as they continue their Counties 2 Championship Community Cup campaign, with the team appearing to have rediscovered the form that made them such a force last season.
