The game was played in some of the worst weather conditions ever. Driving rain and a ferocious cross wind didn’t give any advantage to either team. It has to be said that the supporters were treated to a fantastic display of rugby from a Helston side that are growing in skill and confidence for week to week. Every single player put 100% effort into the game and the result was testament to this. Keep it going boys!!
Redruth kicked off to start the game and a great take from Dan Palmer saw Helston advance near to the half way line. The Helston forwards were then faced with a few minutes of continuous rucking before Redruth gave away a penalty for not releasing Dan Woodley. Matt Blee stepped up and kicked for touch landing the ball on the Redruth 22. The Helston lineout worked to perfection with team captain Lewis Channon skilfully catching everything that was thrown at him. Dan Duval fired the ball from the lineout to the backs. Tom Hawken made a break through the Redruth defence with a sly sidestep but was tackled and with some pretty fired up Redruth backs was harshly penalised for holding on. Redruth cleared their lines back to halfway for a lineout.
It was Will Gibson who emerged from the lineout with the ball in hand and an awesome run saw him make 20 meters and offload to Jack Yelland who was hot in pursuit and provided a great pass to Matt Blee. Matt saw a gap and kicked the ball up the right wing for Finley to give chase. It was however a hungry Tian Clark as ever who scooped up the ball at pace and offloaded in the next tackle to Wade Toy eager in support. Wades pass found Tom and toms Pass found Matt who got his head down and barged his way through a wall of Redruth players to score Helston's first try. Dan Duval stepped up for the conversion and with a powerful kick was truly unlucky for the wind to gust and take it around the post.
Finley Holden suffered an injury and was replaced by Theo Surridge on the right wing. The restart saw Kyle Bradley take the ball and weave his way through sea of Redruth players. The Helston forward were close behind ready to skilfully maul the ball up field once more. Adam Christopher had a fantastic run of the back to make 15 meters and with Josh Berryman in support the two made good ground.
The second half saw a number of changes with Josh Berryman, Dan Palmer and Dan Woodley making way for Jordi Hoskin, Jon England and Jake Bolton. Redruth were awarded a lineout but it was the Helston lineout king Lewis Channon who stole the ball. Dan Duval's pass was great and Matt Blee again kicked over the top of the Redruth players for Kyle Bradley and Ben Richards to chase. It was Wade Toy who picked up the ball and went to ground. Redruth were immedialtey penalised for holding on and the boot of Matt Blee once again put Helston down on the Redruth 5 meter line. Helston forwards again made the most with a catch and drive. Dan Duval’s pass from the back found Matt Blee who steam rollered through a wall of Red to touch down for Helston’s second try. Dan Duval kicking into a strong wind narrowly missed the conversion.
Redruth’s restart was gathered by Will Gibson who powered back through the Redruth defence with Jake Bolton following him in support. Jordi Hoskin showed great strength throughout the game with some impressive rucking skills. It was Tian Clark who picked the ball from the ruck and sprinted for the Redruth line to score Helston's third try. Dan Duval stepped up for the conversion and fired the ball through the middle of the uprights.
Two more substitutions were made as Ben Richards and Dan Woodley made way for Jonny Vincent and Alex Evans. Theo Surridge gathered the ball off the restart and the ball was moved with precision from the right side over to the left where Will Gibson joined the line to make another 15 meter carry.
With 5 minutes to go the boot of Matt Blee saw the ball back into the Reds 22 where it remained until the final whistle.
Thanks go to the fantastic coaches and supporters who were behind the team for the whole match.
